“[Identity management] is a complex space that just keeps growing and growing,” notes Julie Smith, Executive Director of the Identity Defined Security Alliance. “Organizations are struggling with figuring out how to deal with it and protect their resources.”
Julie joined a recent episode of the Hybrid Identity Protection (HIP) Podcast to discuss these challenges. For example, the Alliance’s 2022 Trends in Securing Digital Identities report reveals that a whopping 84% of respondents said they’d experienced an identity-related breach during the past year.
Identity management trends to track
With Gartner placing a greater focus on Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR), understanding trends and techniques in digital identity management and security is vital for security, IT, identity, and operations professionals. Julie notes that increased awareness might be partially responsible for the uptick in responses around breach events. But new attacks and threat actors consistently make the headlines, with attacks targeting a range of industries, from schools to retailers to healthcare and government organizations.
During our interview, Julie and I discussed the findings from the Alliance report and what organizations can learn from this data:
Increasing numbers of digital identities and the challenges of protecting them
The importance of executive leadership regarding password security
Operational impacts of identity-related breaches
“There’s a lot of good guidance in [the report] in terms of how could some of these identity-related breaches be prevented,” Julie notes.
